22 pupils plus driver die in Kano road crash

Twenty-Two pupils of Government Secondary School, Misau, Bauchi State, who were on excursion in Kano, died yesterday in an accident on the Bauchi–Kano Road.The driver of the bus conveying  them also died in the crash which occurred at about 11.00 am. The 18-seater  bus had a head on collision with an articulated vehicle carrying tomatoes. It was  in Tsaida village in Gaya Local Government Council.The pupils were headed for a radio station on excursion.Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kano State, Kabir Ibrahim-Daura, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the 22 students and their driver died while three others sustained serious injuries.“Of the 22 students, 12 are males while the remaining 10 are females.
“Two of the injured were taken to Gaya General Hospital while the remaining one has been referred to a Specialist Hospital in Kano,” he said.Ibrahim-Daura said all the bodies had been deposited at the Gaya General Hospital.
An eyewitness account said both the bus and the truck were trying to avoid pot holes at Samia Uku village when the accident occurred.The eyewitness Ibrahim Adamu said there is an ongoing road construction in the area.
”The bus was on high speed and same with the trailer before the driver of the bus lost control and collided with the truck”

Alleged N4.478billion contracts fraud

Eight companies which got N4.478 billion to supply 104 Unity Colleges Science Kits disappeared with the cash. The Universal Basi c Education Commission (UBEC) has written the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to admit that the kits were not supplied. The anti-graft agency is probing top UBEC. Officials for alleged diversion of a huge chunk of the N20 billion voted for contracts. One of the contracts is the supply of science and technical equipment and books. The movement of about eight suspects has been restricted to the country following the seizure of their passports. UBEC conducted an audit of the items supplied by the eight companies. In a March 1, 2018 letter to the EFCC, signed by an Assistant Director for Procurement, Benjamin A. Smart, UBEC confirmed that there was fraud in the contracts.
