Differences between a Tourist and a Backpacker

As we all know they all travel to foreign land and both of them can be refer to as tourist, they travel to countries they haven’t been before to explore the life in there, some even explore the countries where they reside if there are places that live up the hype in their environment. This post was inspired as a result of my last post about places in Africa that live up to the hype given to them. As both of them travel to foreign land, huge differences exist among them, as both are not the same and each has what distinguish them from one another. I hope after this post you will be able to differentiate between a tourist and a backpacker.

Budgets of a Tourist and a Backpacker
Their budget seems to be the number difference among them, tourist usually spend more money than a backpacker does. Tourist is always richer and is either on vacation and spending is always high compare to backpacker. Most tourists are out there for the pleasure and getting the break they so deserve from work environment which is not the same for a backpacker

Travel Approach
Travel approach is different, as a tourists wants to see the local life of the new environment that they are in, while a backpacker wants to live the life of the local dwellers. They travel in public transport unlike the tourist who hires a private car to drive them about and stay in a nice hotel and eat in one of the best restaurant available. But backpacker sleeps in guest house and buys food from the street like the locals do.

Tourist Arrive, Backpackers Wander
Tourist has a mapped out details of what he will be doing between the fourteen days he will be staying and has a time for every activities he will be participating unlike a backpacker he decides what he will be doing the day of it happening, changes can be made, he just flow with the fun of being present in the foreign land without time table, he doesn’t even know what he will be doing tomorrow. He is Clueless of his next move.

Friends
Tourists make little or no friends during their and if they eventually do, it is always a tourist like them, but a backpacker makes lots of friends in a very short time, especially with the locals, because he is always hanging out with them.
